Mindfulness in Pregnancy Study


Overview

Dr. Karen Lindsay and researchers from the Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute (SSIHI) at the University of California, Irvine are recruiting participants for a research study to compare two mindfulness courses for pregnant women.

Findings

We want to understand differences in maternal acceptability between the Mindfulness‐Based Stress Reduction and Mindful Self‐Compassion courses, changes in psychological well‐being and in biomarkers of glucose control and inflammation.

Participate

Eligibility:

  • Currently pregnant with one baby
  • Before 27 weeks in your pregnancy
  • Aged over 18 years
  • Non‐diabetic
  • Fluent in English

Time Commitment:

Participation involves an initial visit at the SSIHI for a blood draw, followed by 8 mindfulness classes (~2‐2.5 hours each) for 8 weeks and a last visit at the SSIHI for post‐course blood draw.

The following procedures will be conducted during the study:

  • Interview and questionnaires
  • Mindfulness practices
  • Collection of 2 blood samples

Compensation:

You will receive cash compensation for your time and effort, as follows: $15 cash for completing surveys/interviews and the blood draw at both the beginning and end of the study, plus an additional $45 spread out over the duration of the 8 week course, for a total of $75 for full study completion.

If you participate, you will be enrolled in one of two instructor‐led mindfulness courses and receive home mindfulness practice materials free of charge ($475 value).
