Massage Therapy

At the Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute, our outstanding team of experienced and certified massage therapists offers a range of modalities from general wellness to custom therapeutic experiences. Massage therapy has many proven positive effects on your mind, body and spirit.

Principles

The foundation of all massage therapies lies in the improved circulation of blood and lymphatic fluid, stimulation of fascia and reduction of stress. Tension in the muscles can hinder blood flow and lymphatic fluid and, consequently, the healing process. It is well understood, however, that physical exertion or injury are not the only causes of aches and pains in the body as stress and anxiety often manifest physically. Massage therapy provides the opportunity to release that tension, restoring normal function.

Conditions Treated

Massage therapies at the Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute may be used to treat the following conditions:

  • Lymphedema
  • Digestive issues
  • Chronic pain
  • Restricting scars
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Insomnia

Services

At the Susan Samueli Institute, we offer a wide variety of massage therapies, ranging from lymphatic drainage to oncology massage. Our services include:

Lymphatic Drainage: Primarily used for patients with Lymphedema, this technique is effective in reducing swelling and decreasing healing time post-surgery. It can also treat joint dislocations, ligament legions, rheumatic illnesses and tendonitis.

Arvigo Techniques or Mayan Abdominal Therapy: This technique addresses the position and health of the pelvic and abdominal organs, and is widely known for its ability to correct prolapsed uterus, fallen uterus, tilted uterus, premenstrual symptom, menopause and the relief of many digestive disorders.

Oncology Massage: This modality is the modification of existing massage techniques in order to safely work with those with cancer, undergoing cancer treatments or in recovery. Its purpose is to comfort, nurture and support the patient in handling all cancer-related issues. Benefits include: improved relaxation, sleep, immune function, as well as the relieving of pain, anxiety and nausea.

Neuromuscular Therapy: Also called trigger point therapy, neuromuscular massage consists of soft tissue manipulation to treat the underlying causes of chronic pain that involve the muscle and nervous system.
