ACUpuncture In The EmergencY department for pain management (ACUITY): An NIH funded multi-site feasibility study with Jeffery Dusek, PhD

UCI Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute Research Speaker Series

Wednesday, July 17, 2024

Pain accounts for up to 78% of Emergency Department (ED) patient visits and acute pain in the ED continues to be under or improperly managed by current treatments (e.g. opioids alone). Non-pharmacologic options that are safe and efficacious for pain are needed to complement pharmacologic options. Jeffery Dusek, PhD, SSIHI director of outcomes research, will briefly review the current evidence for acupuncture to be utilized as a pain management intervention in the Emergency Department. He will report on his recently completed NIH-funded R01 multi-site feasibility randomized controlled trial (RCT) called ACUITY with 3 sites: University Hospitals/Case Western Reserve University, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, University of California-San Diego (UCSD) and present the next steps in his research in this area.
