Osteopathic Manipulation Treatment

Overview

Osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) employs the use of manual pressure in precise ways to alleviate pain and restore function to the body. Your doctor of osteopathy (DO) manipulates muscles, joints and connective tissues using techniques that include stretching, gentle pressure and resistance. OMT may be attempted as an alternative to surgery or medication.

Principles

Osteopathic manipulative treatment is based on the premise that all body systems are interrelated and dependent upon one another. This treatment addresses the root biomechanical causes and symptoms of injuries and illnesses.

Using a manipulative technique, the trained physician will move, stretch and apply pressure to your muscles, joints and connective tissues to address your specific goals for reducing pain, encouraging blood flow and improving range of motion as need. The American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine notes 40 different manipulative techniques that may be used to address specific clinical situations.

Related to this treatment, your osteopathic physician may also talk with you about nutritional issues, sleep habits or mental health.
