Inpatient Integrative Health Services

Overview

The Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute collaborates with UCI Health medical, surgical, neuropsychiatric, burn, acute rehabilitation and emergency medicine teams to provide inpatient integrative services for patients experiencing a variety of symptoms. Our team provides acupuncture service at UCI Medical Center, one of the few acute hospitals in the nation to offer patients access to this service across multiple units. The institute also participates in ongoing integrative care training that enables nurses and other healthcare professionals to recognize when patients may benefit from integrative services.

Principles

Evidence-informed, integrative services have been shown to help hospital patients who are experiencing symptoms such as pain, nausea, anxiety and/or insomnia. UCI Health inpatient services may include acupuncture, acupressure, aromatherapy, or guided meditation, as well as group instruction in acupressure and Tai Chi/Qigong. Hospital patients using one or more of these services have reported reduced pain, improved sleep, less stress and less anxiety. There may also be a correlation between the use of integrative services and reductions in pain medication and readmission for some people.
